Getting started
Digrules helps you identify the damage-prevention practices and regulatory requirements that apply to a planned excavation. It is not a substitute for calling 811, not a locate request, and not engineering or legal advice.
- Go to the App page.
- Fill in the details of your planned excavation: depth, method, surface type, distance to the nearest marked facility, locate ticket status, ticket date, planned excavation date, your state (optional), and which utilities are marked on site.
- Describe the dig in the free-text field — this helps the tool identify additional risk factors from your description.
- Click "Assess this dig" and review the results. Each requirement is named, explained, and cited to its source (CGA Best Practice, OSHA standard, or state one-call law).
- Share the results with your crew, foreman, or utility risk manager. The tool does not store your submission — if you navigate away, the results are gone.
You do not need an account, a login, or a credit card. Everything runs on the Free plan.
Frequently asked questions
Where do the regulatory citations come from?
The tool checks a defined set of practices from:
- Common Ground Alliance Best Practices — the industry standard for underground damage prevention.
- OSHA 29 CFR 1926 Subpart P — federal excavation safety requirements.
- State one-call laws for California (CA), Texas (TX), and New York (NY). For other states, general CGA and OSHA standards are applied and state variation is noted in the output.
The tool does not guarantee completeness. Requirements vary by local jurisdiction and facility owner. Always consult the applicable one-call centre and your facility owners.
What does the tool check?
The tool evaluates your input against these areas:
- Tolerance zone hand-digging — Mechanical excavation within 24 in of a marked facility triggers hand-digging requirements (CGA Best Practice 1-4).
- Deep excavation shoring — Excavations deeper than 5 ft require a protective system against cave-ins (OSHA 29 CFR 1926.652).
- Ticket validity — The tool computes the 14-day validity window from your ticket date and compares it to the planned excavation date. The arithmetic is shown so you can verify it.
- No marks means no dig — Excavation without facility marks on-site is a violation of CGA Best Practice.
- Potholing for paved surfaces — Test holes are needed before mechanical excavation through pavement over marked utilities (CGA BP 2-1).
- Markings maintenance — Once marks are placed, they must be maintained throughout the excavation (CGA BP 7-1).
- Basic site safety — OSHA excavation safety requirements apply to every dig (29 CFR 1926.651).
What does the tool NOT check?
- It does not call 811 or file a locate ticket on your behalf. You must call 811 at least 2 business days before excavating.
- It does not integrate with any one-call system, GIS platform, or locating service.
- It does not produce a risk score or tell you it is safe to dig. It names applicable practices — the decision is yours.
- It does not check all possible state and local requirements. State coverage is limited to CA, TX, and NY.
- It does not account for site-specific conditions like soil type, groundwater, or adjacent structures beyond what you describe.
What do I do if my locate ticket has expired or is about to expire?
The tool computes the 14-day validity window from the ticket date you enter and compares it to the planned excavation date. If the ticket has expired or will expire before the dig date, the tool will flag this and cite the requirement for a renewed ticket. You will need to call 811 again to request a new ticket. The tool cannot renew a ticket or notify you when one expires — there is no email sender or notification system in this product. Check the ticket date yourself and plan accordingly.
What happens to my data?
Nothing. The excavation details you enter are sent to the server over HTTPS, processed in memory during the request, and discarded immediately after the response is returned. No data is written to a database, log file, or any persistent storage. There are no user accounts, no saved history, and no cookies. The results exist only in your browser tab for the duration of the page view. See the Privacy Policy for full details.
Do I need an account? Can I save my assessments?
No account is needed. Digrules does not offer user accounts, saved history, or any form of persistent storage. Every assessment is a fresh submission. If you need to refer back to a result, take a screenshot or note the applicable practices before navigating away. There is no email-based recovery or saved-dig log. (A Team plan with dig history is planned but not yet available.)
Can I use Digrules for multiple dig sites?
Yes — there is no limit on the number of assessments you can run. Each submission is independent. If you are managing multiple dig sites for a crew or company, you can submit each one separately. A Team plan with batch assessment and workspace features is planned but not yet available.
Can I get API access or exportable reports?
API access and PDF export of assessment results are planned features for the Team plan. Neither is available today. If you have a specific integration need, contact us at digrules@agen2ic.ai — we may be able to help.
Known limitations
This section lists what the product does not yet do or cannot do. These are not bugs — they are design constraints and planned work that has not shipped.
- No one-call integration. The tool does not submit locate tickets, query 811 centres, or read positive-response data. You must call 811 separately.
- No email or notifications. There is no email sender in this fleet. The tool cannot send you reminders when a ticket is about to expire, confirm your submission, or send dig alerts. The expiry date is computed and displayed — you are responsible for tracking it.
- No risk score. The tool names factors that raise risk; it does not produce a numerical risk score, probability, or "safe to dig" indicator. A number that looks actuarial but is not calibrated would be dangerous, so the tool does not produce one.
- Limited state coverage. State-specific notes are available only for CA, TX, and NY. For all other states, the tool applies general CGA Best Practices and OSHA standards and notes that state requirements may differ.
- No Team plan yet. Multi-user workspaces, batch assessment, dig history, PDF export, and API access are planned but not available for purchase. The checkout on the Pricing page is connected to a payment processor in test mode only — no real payment is processed.
- No legal entity. No company, address, or jurisdiction has been registered for this product. See the Terms of Service for details.
- Not a substitute for professional advice. The output is a computed list of potentially applicable practices. It does not replace the judgment of a qualified professional, facility owner, or regulatory authority.
